Columbia County Coroner Michael R. Blasl has announced his candidacy for re-election in November.

Blasl has served as County Coroner since 2014.

In announcing his candidacy, Coroner Blasl touched on several areas of accomplishment including his push to digitize files at the Columbia County Coroner’s Office to make the files easily accessible to the Coroners from the field using secure, electronic connections.

“Our new digital files project will improve efficiency and allow us to work more seamlessly with each other as Coroners and with our partners in law enforcement,” Blasl said. “My priority is to always provide expeditious, accurate, and complete information to families and next of kin. This project will improve that effort,” Blasl added.

In addition to his experience serving as Columbia County Coroner, Blasl is a licensed funeral director and has vast experience in mortuary science and expertise in state rules and regulations pertaining to care and custody of deceased. Over the course of his long career, Blasl has been involved in over 15,000 cases of loss, grief and profound tragedies; working with families, loved ones and communities at large.

Upon learning of Coroner Blasl’s plans to seek re-election, fellow Columbia County Coroner James Bertram and retired longtime County Coroner Angelo Nero both enthusiastically endorsed Blasl.

“Mike Blasl is one of the most qualified Coroners Columbia County has had in decades. His experience and dedication is simply unmatched. Mike makes himself available at all hours of the day and night and works tirelessly to ensure the dignity and rights of the deceased are protected,” Bertram said.

Retired Coroner Angelo Nero added, “I'm happy to support Mike for re-election. He has proven himself to be a very capable Coroner; one who advocates not just for the deceased, but for the families he deals with as well. I had the pleasure of working with Mike for several years before I retired as a Coroner. His vast experience serves him well as Coroner. He's very worthy of our support and votes. “

Coroner Blasl resides in Chatham with his wife Dawn-Marie. They have one grown son, Michael. He is owner and operator of French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home and is involved in many community organizations including the Kinderhook Elks, Columbia County 50’s Group Club, Chatham Lions, Ocean Fire Company (Chatham), the Tracy Foundation, Friends of the Tracy, the Payne Home, and St. James Parish.
